With a potential flyweight division making its way to the UFC in early 2012, you can bet that Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall will be in line as one of the top contenders for that belt.
For those of you who don’t recognize the name (or the nickname), Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall was best known for his presence in the WEC, losing to Dominick Cruz in 2009. Since then, Uncle Creepy has not lost since his departure from the WEC’s bantamweight division. He is currently ranked #1 in the world in the flyweight division by Sherdog.com.
In February, the Team Oyama MMA flyweight signed with Tachi Palace Fights, a California based fight promotion. His first fight was against Jussier da Silva, who at the time was ranked as the #1 flyweight in the world. Uncle Creepy upset da Silva via unanimous decision and later went on to beat Dustin Ortiz (who was unbeaten at the time). He then beat Darrell Montague (TPF Flyweight Champion) for the TPF Flyweight belt.
I was fortunate to be able to touch base with Uncle Creepy before his next fight at Tachi coming up on December 2nd against Josh Rave:
You’ve been on a winning streak since leaving the WEC in 2009. Tell us about your upset over Brazil’s Jussier da Silva at Tachi and what it means for you to beat the man who was once considered the top flyweight in the world.
Beating Jussier was a great opportunity for not only my own self worth, but I finally got to show everyone that I could live up to the expectations they all had for me and I had for myself. After rededicating myself to the sport, it made my hard work worth it.
What’s the story behind your nickname, “Uncle Creepy?”
My friend’s son calls me “Uncle Ian” and one day called me, “Uncle Creepy” when I was trying to teach him to skateboard.
Congratulations on your marriage earlier this year and the arrival of your first child, London. How has becoming a husband and a father changed you?
Thank you, thank you. The changes in my life have made it so now I have to win even more because I have two more mouths to feed. I’m more interested in building a legacy and a financial future instead of just becoming famous. It also gives me more time to train believe it or not because now I don’t worry about going out and partying or spend too much time chasing women. I just train my butt off and I come home to my beautiful girls I have waiting for me there.
For all the MMA fans who may not recognize you from the WEC, what would you want them to know about Uncle Creepy and what’s in store for them when watching you fight in the future?
I want people to know that no matter who I’m fighting that it will always be very exciting, technical, fast paced, for the entire fight. I fight for the fans because they are the ones that put the shirt on my back. You should see me soon in the UFC let’s hope by early next year.
