MMASucka’s UFC 247 Staff Picks

MMASucka staff picks are locked in for today’s UFC 247. The event will take place from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Preliminary action will begin at 8:00pm ET (5:00pm ET) on ESPN with the main card at 10:00pm ET (7:00pm PT) on pay-per-view.

Due to time constraints, staff picks for ONE Championship: Warrior’s Code were unable to get published. Results from the card will be posted in parentheses in our “Staff Records” section.

The Fights

The UFC’s light heavyweight title is on the line as champion Jon Jones looks to defend his strap against rising star Dominick Reyes. After getting stripped for a second time of the belt in 2017, Jones rebounded winning the vacant title over Alexander Gustafsson by knockout. 2019 saw two more title defenses including a unanimous decision over Anthony Smith and a back-and-forth split decision over Thiago Santos. Despite the controversial Santos win, 32-year-old Jones will look for his third straight defense aiming to further extend his resume as the greatest light heavyweight all-time. His opponent, Reyes, comes in two years younger on a dominant twelve-fight win streak. A controversial decision win over Volkan Oezdemir last March was followed in October by a vicious first-round knockout over former middleweight champion Chris Weidman. The undefeated Reyes will look for a potential eighth career knockout or third by way of submission.

A title in the co-main event is also up for grabs between flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko and challenger Katlyn Chookagian. Shevchenko looks for her third straight title defense as the 125-pound champion while Chookagian attempts to get her third straight victory within a non-calendar year.

Staff Picks

Throughout the year, staff picks will be composed of five different MMA promotions. UFCBellatorONE, and RIZIN all appeared for the 2019 season and will make returns. The newest addition for the 2020 year will see the PFL including their regular season, playoffs, and championship card. A special staff picks bonus will be introduced and discussed regarding PFL’s playoff format as time gets closer.

Main cards will makeup both UFC and Bellator picks, while the biggest fights to make up ONE, RIZIN, and PFL events will be used. The WINNER of staff picks will have a choice between receiving a championship belt from ProAmBelts or a championship chain from Championship Chains. The 2019 winner was awarded to Michael DeSantis, compiling a record of 321-178. Second-place Connor Deitrich collected a close score of 319-180 with third-place Ed Gallo not far behind totaling at 312-183.
