Prospect Watch: Alexis Villa

By Subaru Muroi

At Bellator 51, a debuting Alexis Villa squared off against Joe Warren, a high-level Greco-roman wrestler who made a name for himself defeating Chase Beebe and Kid Yamamoto. Both of those his first two professional fights and followed up by winning the Bellator featherweight tournament in 2010.  The bout was contested at 135lbs in a Bellator Bantamweight quarterfinal bout.  Villa made his Cuban heritage proud by showing superior use of the sweet science rocking Warren early with a jab-weave-right hook combo and utilizing a beautiful counter left hook to knock the larger fighter out cold.

Despite being 40 years old, it doesn’t get much scarier than a two time world champion wrestler that can throw punches like he is Yuriorkis Gamboa (Insert Mike Tyson if you don’t watch boxing).  Even though Warren is his first high profile fight, the cleanness of the punches he threw says a lot about the 5 (t)ko streak Villa had entering the fight (now 6 (t)ko streak).  Riding a 10-0 record Alexis Villa is definitely someone to watch out for and a prospect in the 135lb division.
