First ROAD FC Featherweight champ to be crowned at ROAD FC 014

When the brackets were first announced, fans were treated with the opportunity to see the likes of former UFC vet Michihiro Omigawa, Japanese MMA staple Kosuke Umeda and top South Korean prospect Bae Young Kwon among others in ROAD FC’s first ever Featherweight tournament.

First ROAD FC Featherweight champ to be crowned at ROAD FC 014

Now, with the inaugural 145-lbs title on the line, the promotion is set to stage the conclusion of the series at ROAD FC 014. Both Bae Young Kwon (9-3) and Choi Moo Ghyum (4-3) will vie for the opportunity to be called ROAD FC’s first ever Featherweight champ.

The tourney started back in June, at ROAD FC 012, where Bae Young Kwon, Kosuke Umeda, Young Bok Gil and Choi Moo Ghyum advanced to the semi finals, handing early exits to Michihiro Omigawa, Chang Hyun Kim (Kim didn’t make weight), Won Ki Kim and Herbert Geven respectively.

And at ROAD FC 013 which took place on October 12, Kwon secured a triumphant knockout victory over Umeda to register his name in the final two. Choi Moo Ghyum, meanwhile, didn’t have to compete for his spot in the finals at all. The South Korean was slated to fight Young Bok Gil at ROAD FC 013 as well, but Gil missed weight and the match-up was scratched from the fight card altogether. ROAD FC hence decided to award Ghyum with an automatic ticket to the finals instead of waiting for the two to compete on a future fight card.

Kwon, now the favorite to gain both the tourney title and strap, is one of Asia’s rising stars from South Korea who holds notable victories over UFC vet Kyung Ho Kang and former ONE FC champ Honorio Banario. The 32-year-old will be hoping to make it 3 wins on the trot following his defeat at the hands of Eric Kelly at ONE FC 4: Destiny of Warriors.

Ghyum will be up for the task in this one. Clearly the underdog, the 23-year-old may very well have to set up the barricades in this one.

Kwon (pictured) vs. Ghyum is expected to headline ROAD FC’s 14th installment, although a date and venue for the event is yet to be announced.
