Rob Font Jabs His Way To Victory At UFC Vegas 27

Rob Font won a unanimous decision over Cody Garbrandt in the main event of UFC Vegas 27, with two judges scoring the contest 50-45 and the other judge scoring it 48-47. Font was able to use his jab to control almost every round of his first main event fight in the UFC. Everyone predicted this fight to be a skilled boxing match, but Garbrandt had other plans. Garbrandt decided to use his wrestling in the first few rounds, landing a series of takedowns although he was never able to do any real damage.

Font was down on the strike count after the first round, but quickly made up for it, almost doubling Garbrandt’s strikes in the second round. Garbrandt was completely gassed going into the championship rounds, which allowed Font to use his jab even more. Garbrandt eventually was unable to get takedowns and Font started taking over. After the fight, Paul Felder told Rob Font that he has the best jab in the UFC. Font’s jab is very crisp and he does a great job keeping his opponent at the end of his jab.

Where They Go From Here

Rob Font should be right in the mix for the bantamweight title after his win at UFC Vegas 27. Aljamain Sterling will probably not be able to defend his title until later this year. In the meantime, TJ Dillashaw will be taking on Cory Sandhagen, and the winner of that fight will most likely be next in line for a title shot.

Cody Garbrandt will probably contemplate going down to flyweight after this loss, but if he does decide to stay at bantamweight, he is probably two or three fights away from another shot at the title. If he does decide to go to flyweight, he should be imminently in line for a number one contender fight, similar to the way Jessica Andrade got fast-tracked to a title shot when she moved weight classes.

Rob Font’s Next Fight

Rob Font is in a bad situation moving forward. He will likely have to wait another year or so to get a title shot. Although he seems to be next in line, he may have to take another fight in the meantime. The loser of TJ Dillashaw versus Cory Sandhagen would be perfect but both of those fighters aren’t the best matchups for Font. Sandhagen has great grappling and we just witnessed Font being taken down and held down for at least two rounds until Garbrandt gassed out. Dillashaw has always been known to be a very well-rounded fighter. Meaning he has great striking but can also dominate the grappling if he needs to.

Either way a win over Dillashaw or Sandhagen would cement Font’s position as the number one contender. Meaning by the year 2022, if Font keeps winning, he will be fighting for the bantamweight title.
