Roy Nelson re-signs with the UFC, gets Daniel Cormier at UFC 166

Sometimes it pays to do the leg work yourself, as Roy Nelson and Daniel Cormier have shown this month. After tweeting a hand-drawn fight agreement back and forth between eachother, the UFC has made it official by locking “Big Country” into a new contract and giving the pair the co-main event at UFC 166.

Roy Nelson re-signs with the UFC, gets Daniel Cormier at UFC 166

The Houston Chronicle initially reported the news earlier today, and was later confirmed by MMAFighting.com after speaking with UFC officials.

Roy “Big Country” Nelson (19-8) has long been a threat in the UFC’s heavyweight division, able to beat all but the best of opponents with his fearsome overhand right. He was last seen at UFC 161, falling by decision to blue-chipper Stipe Miocic by decision. The durable former grappling ace has garnered fans worldwide both with his laser-guided fist missles and with his whacky antics outside of the cage, much to the chagrin of Dana White. Will “Big Country” be able to continue to make his boss sweat by defeating the former Olympian?

Daniel Cormier (12-0) is one of the most successful wrestlers ever to transition into a fruitful MMA career. The captain of the 2008 US Olympic wrestling team, Cormier has, for the most part, taken on increasingly difficult opposition and come out on top every time. Cormier last appeared in the cage grinding his way to victory over Frank Mir at UFC on FOX 7, earning a unanimous decision victory in his Octagon debut. Will he be able to continue building his legend with a victory over “Big Country?”

UFC 166 goes down on October 19th, 2013 at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX. The main event is currently scheduled to be a trilogy bout for the UFC Heavyweight title, with the champion, Cain Velasquez, taking on his arch-rival, Junior dos Santos.
