RUFF to add welterweight division in 2013

Press Release – Friday, 28 September 2012

RUFF founder Joel Resnick has announced the addition of a new championship welterweight division (77kg/170lbs) for the 2013-2014 MMA season. With the explosive growth of MMA in China since RUFF’s inception in August 2011, the debut of a new class is an obvious choice.

Resnick anticipates the athletes who will compete at this weight class, the sixth for the organization, will bring a new dimension of excitement for fans and fighters alike.

“There are a lot of guys out there saying they’re the toughest at 77 kilos,” comments Resnick, “so come on prove that you’re the best.”

Currently, there have been no signings announced for this weight class, but close followers of MMA in the region know there are several names that could make an immediate splash in the division.

At present, RUFF features fighters from all over China, as well as a number of foreign signees who hold both valid Chinese work permits (including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau), in five different weight classes. Championship belts and five one-million RMB prizes will be handed out in these weight classes at RUFF’s 2013 RMB 1,000,000 Super Fight, which is scheduled to be held early next year.

Resnick is confident that the money and honor that comes with fighting and winning for RUFF will attract significant new talent in the welterweight division.

“It seems obvious to me,” he adds. “We’ve got guys fighting for a million RMB and the chance to become their country’s national champion. If you’re the best, why wouldn’t you want to fight for us?”
