Sean Brady Exploring Move Down to Lightweight After Recent Loss

Can Sean Brady compete at 155lbs?

Top welterweight contender Sean Brady is considering a move down to 155lbs from his 170lbs home. After a devastating loss last time out, the American has discussed a potential weight class move.

A stalwart of the top of the division, Sean Brady was on the brink of a title shot, risked it all and came up short. Taking on the undefeated, lower-ranked Michael Morales, Brady was blasted away in just 3:27, suffering just his second career loss. Unfortunately for Brady, he’s now a long way off a title shot. Carlos Prates, Morales, Kamaru Usman, Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Machado Garry are all ahead of him and although he would provide the champion, Islam Makhachev with a different test, there’s no chance he gets a title shot any time soon.

Sean Brady to Lightweight?

On a recent episode of The Brady Bagz podcast, Sean Brady discussed his recent loss and was questioned as to whether he believed Morales’ size caused him issues.

Brady responded and opened up a potential run at lightweight:

“I don’t think I’m too small — I’ve done testing at the UFC P.I., and I’m at the max muscle mass at 170,” Brady said. “But yeah, I’m a smaller 170. If you look at everyone in the top of the division, they’re all over six feet. It’s something I might visit at some point, maybe try to get down to 155. It would be very, very hard. It’s not a skill thing or a strength thing — it’s a dimensions thing. Morales is just a freak. I heard they weighed him in the back at 210 pounds.”

For context, Brady is 5ft9 with a 72 inch reach. Morales is 6ft witha 79 inch reach. The full podcast can be found here:

How would Brady do at 155lbs?

Sean Brady is certainly talented. He’s dangerous enough on the feet to be able to force opponents into his world, the wrestling realm. He averages 3.53 takedowns per 15 minutes and at lightweight could slot into the top of the division with ease.

Fights against Paddy Pimblett, Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje (men who are at the top of the division) would all be competitive and a move down in weight could see Brady take the division by storm. Exciting things for 2026.
