Liverpool’s Shem Rock finally made his UFC debut at UFC Qatar; however, unfortunately for him and the Next Generation team, he came away with a loss.
Shem Rock was matched with the undefeated Nurullo Aliev, who is 2-0 in the UFC, with wins over Rafael Alves and Joe Solecki. The tough Tajikistan native outworked Rock with constant threats of the takedown, teamed with some heavy shots on the feet.
Rock had a great opportunity in the final round when he was able to mount Aliev, however, the Tajik Eagle effectively grappled his way out of the situation.
Rock appeared to start slow and never truly get going, not being able to find his range with consistency, nor could he effectively work his wrestling game.
Shem Rock can still be an Issue
At 32 years old and with an extensive career in smaller promotions, Rock can still make a run at the top 15 at lightweight. He’s had a good career in Oktagon and with teammate and coach, Paddy Pimbeltt, making a run at the lightweight belt, there’s a good chance we will see Rock on a Pimblett undercard at some point.
Rock’s teammate, Luke Riley, will be hoping for a better showing later when he takes on Bogdan Grad.
The co-main event sees Ian Machado Garry take on Belal Muhammad in a potential #1 contenders fight at welterweight. The main event will see Arman Tsarukyan clash with Dan Hooker in an exciting lightweight clash.
UFC Qatar will be a night to forget for Shem Rock, however, making your UFC debut is always something to be proud of.
