The Cannabis Chronicles: Chris Curtis

Chris Curtis is a pro MMA fighter who is currently fighting in the PFL welterweight tournament. He has advanced to the playoffs, and will have a rematch with Magomed Magomedkerimov on October 11th. Curtis formally fought on the north eastern local MMA circuit with CES. He also appeared on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2018, where he got himself a knockout win over Sean Lally. MMASucka recently spoke with Chris Curtis about his view on Cannabis in the sport of MMA.

Curtis Is Not A Cannabis User

In the first messages with Curtis he revealed that he has not smoked marijuana in 12 years. He stated that when he was younger and he tried to smoke it, it made him sick. Curtis has made it clear that he is not against cannabis, it’s just not for him.

Other Fighters Using Cannabis

When asked if he believes cannabis can be considered performance enhancing, he replied “I don’t consider it a performance enhancer anymore then aspirin. Curtis also specified that he does not use cannabis or any other pain killers while training. He said that although he does not do cannabis, he does not care if his opponents do, as he feels it does not boost their performance.

The Nick Diaz Situation

Back in 2015 Nick Diaz was suspended for 5 years following his Anderson Silva fight for testing positive for marijuana. Seeing how Curtis trains in California which is also the home of Nick Diaz, Curtis was asked his opinion on the situation. He responded by saying. “It helped his nerves but it did not give him better recovery or an athletic advantage. I can’t think of any tangible benefit he got from it besides relaxing.” When asked if he believes USADA should be stricter when it comes to cannabis, his reply was simply, “No”.

The PFL’s first card of the playoffs will be October 11th, featuring the women’s lightweights and the men’s welterweights. If victorious, Curtis would be fighting twice in one night, with the semi finals being decided later in the card.
