The Fight Business Podcast Episode 2: UFC and ESPN

Ever wonder how your favorite mixed martial arts promotions turn a profit? Want to know how the UFC got a $4 billion dollar valuation and became part of the largest franchise sale in sports history? Don’t understand why the UFC is throwing out interim titles left and right like they’re on sale?

The newest podcast on the MMASucka network. In this new show, hosted by staff writer and resident business consultant, Patrick Auger, we take an in-depth look at the business side of MMA. From PPV buy rates to broadcast partnerships, ‘The Fight Business Podcast’ discusses the money end of mixed martial arts.

Technical Difficulties…

So it’s pretty safe to assume that I had been planning to release another episode of the Fight Business Podcast much sooner. But a certain airline destroyed not one, but TWO of my laptop computers. I won’t get into specifics, but there was much dismay and grumbling to be had. So apologies for the long delay, and promise I won’t make a habit of it. The plan is to do this show weekly. If that becomes an issue possibly bi-weekly, but we’ll see what happens down the road.

Episode 2, Now with Breaking News Reactions!

That being said The Fight Business Podcast is back! With near perfect timing no less as when I recorded this episode the news had just broke about the new deal between the UFC and ESPN regarding pay-per-view distribution. I opted to keep things recording for more of an immediate reaction rather than take some time to prep something on the issue, so let me know how you like it as its not the traditional recorded podcast material.

We’ll also discuss the UFC’s growing success in international markets. Breakdown which fighters over the past couple of events have had breakout moments and may get an extra push from the UFC brass. I excluded UFC 235 due to lack of time, and will cover that in next week’s episode, and what a business has to consider in the Tony Ferguson situation.
