It would appear that the long-awaited matchup between UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and interim title holder Tom Aspinall may be close to being a done deal.
Dana White Gives Update on Major Heavyweight Clash Matching Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones
When it comes to important matches to make in mixed martial arts, a pairing between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall may just be the most entertaining, and most necessary, bout to book right now. It’s something that UFC CEO Dana White recognizes and has outright stated that the fight will 100% happen this year.
Traveling to the UK for UFC Fight Night 255, White sat down with TNT Sports (UK) to discuss more about the event, the upcoming UFC 304 show and the aforementioned Jon Jones vs Tom Aspinall contest. Giving a further update on the 265-lb matchup, White mentions how close it is to being official, stating that the only obstacle left now is producing signatures.
“Well, I’ll tell you what I’ve been telling you since day one: The fight’s going to happen,” White said. “It’s just a matter of when now, and getting it signed and done. The fight will happen. It’s gonna happen. It’s done, but it’s not done enough to sit right here now and announce it and give you a date, but the fight is going to happen. There’s no logistics. It’s just a matter of getting it signed.”
Jon Jones, Tom Aspinall Have Separated Themselves From Pack at Heavyweight
In the largest and hardest hitting division in the UFC, Jones and Aspinall are easily in a league of their very own. Jumping back into competition after three years away from the company, Jones impressed in waves by submitting previous interim champion Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in the first round.
Taking another extended leave of absence following a pectoral injury in training, “Bones” returned at UFC 309 to batter heavyweight great Stipe Miocic via third-round knockout.
Embarking on possibly the fastest meteoric rise in the division’s history, Tom Aspinall floored his first five opponents in the promotion before suffering an injury-related setback against Curtis Blaydes. Rebounding a year later, the Englishman has since picked up three straight victories, including exacting his revenge over “Razor” with a thunderous knockout at UFC 304, defending his interim strap in the process.
