5. Justin Scoggins – Pharrel Williams’ “Happy” (UFC 171)
Justin Scoggins is a unique cat, even by MMA standards. That means he’s bound to have some inspired choices in walkout music. His trip to the cage was soundtracked by one of the biggest, brightest songs of the past 5-10 years, and really seemed to suit his personality. Hopefully he will return to it, as it’s a lot better than the Portugal the Man track he used afterwards…
4. Stephen Thompson – Tenacious D’s “Wonderboy”
Stephen Thompson is a smart man, as he knows the value of a signature walk-out track. It helps people to recognize you, and that’s a huge thing in today’s crowded MMA landscape. The fact that the song’s title is his nickname makes it all the better.
3. Carla Esparza – Metallica’s “Harvest of Sorrow”
From the person you would least expect to break out a deep, deep Metallica cut, you get this. The TUF 20 Finale wasn’t the first time that the new UFC Strawweight champ has walked out to this tune, but it may very well have been one of the best.
2. Tim Kennedy – Alice in Chains’ “Rooster”
A song about a damaged Vietnam veteran seems appropriate for the surly former US Army Special Forces sniper. The slow, deliberate build makes for a powerful entrance, and Kennedy’s repeated use of this track has made inextricably linked the song to himself.
1. Robbie Lawler – Sam & Dave’s “Hold on! I’m A Coming” (UFC 181)
We did hold on, and Robbie Lawler did indeed come out of UFC 181 as the new welterweight kingpin in his rematch with Johny Hendricks. That’s what, in the end, made the song such an appropriate choice, and earns it the top spot as best walk-out of 2014. Plus, it’s old-school soul. You can’t ever go wrong with that.
