UFC 180 flying under the radar fights

On October 21 it was announced that UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez was forced out of the UFC 180 main event against Fabricio Werdum due to a knee injury while training. As a result, Mark Hunt will now fill in and take on Werdum for the interim heavyweight title.

UFC 180 Flying Under the Radar

Joe Lauzon was expected to take on Diego Sanchez on the main card as well, however first Lauzon pulled out and then days later Sanchez fell out due to injury. If that wasn’t bad enough, Mexican fighter Erik Perez was also forced off the UFC 180 fight card with an injury.

The loss of the champion in the main event could very well be the biggest loss the UFC has had in 2014. Not only is he your heavyweight champion, but it is also the promotions first appearance south of the border in Mexico. They marketed the heck out of this fight and now it’s no more.

Werdum is the heavy favorite, but Hunt has been the underdog in almost all of his UFC outings and since his debut has gone an impressive 5-2-1, which earned him this spot.

With the injured fighters off the card, fans are not clamouring to purchase this pay-per-view. However, looking at it on paper, it definitely flies a little under the radar.

In the co-main event, Jake Ellenberger makes his return to the Octagon after the first two-fight losing skid of his career and he will be taking on undefeated Kelvin Gastelum. Another bout that should have fans on their feet is, Ricardo Lamas vs. Dennis Bermudez. Lamas has always been “in the mix” amongst the UFC’s 145-pound division and Bermudez is inching himself closer and closer to a title shot, as he is riding an outstanding seven-fight winning streak.

UFC 180 takes place at Arena Mexico on Nov. 15 in Mexico City.  It was originally to be headlined by the heavyweight champion making his return to the Octagon for the first time in over a year, Cain Velasquez, taking on #1 contender Fabricio Werdum.  Velasquez got injured and Mark Hunt stepped in, now fighting Werdum for the interim heavyweight title.
