UFC 249 is the event that many fans most look forward to. The card has a main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. The UFC are known for stacking their cards. UFC 249 is no exception.
In the co-main event pitches Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade against one another. This is a rematch from last May. Both women are former champs. Aside from that, the card features a number of credentialed fighters. Islam Makhachev, Alex Hernandez, Jeremy Stephens and Calvin Kattar are ready to grace the main card. So the only question is: will it happen?
The answer is maybe. A big maybe. The coronavirus has gone global. It seems that no public-facing business is left alone. The MMA world is not exempt. UFC, Bellator and One FC have all taken steps to fight the virus. The UFC have scrapped their last three cards.
Good News for UFC 249
However, good news just arrived. UFC President Dana White just tweeted “I was worried about this fight too… but I will get this done”. Below his caption, Dana had a photo of both fighters aged. If you are a fan, you know what he means. This is the fifth time this fight has been booked. Many fans think the fight is cursed. It fell apart from injuries four times. Perhaps, we’ll see it when both of them are old and way past their prime.
Dana kept silent on the venue. However, we are told that it’s “99.9 percent done”.
There is a silver lining to this. Originally, the fight was to take place in New York. New York’s Andrew Cuomo has banned groups bigger than a certain size from gathering, hence the need for a new venue.
New York’s officials also have a bad track record. For example, a concerned doctor stopped the main event at UFC 244. Should something like that happen to Tony or Khabib, fans will overreact.
While we still do not know where it will be held, we can hope it will be someplace better for the sport. We can also hope that no emergency services are strained as a result of the event.
