Shavkat Rakhmonov, a Top UFC Prospect, Has Asked for a Welterweight Title Shot in Abu Dhabi

Kazakhstani won convincingly at UFC 285 over the weekend, improving his pro-MMA record to 17-0. Shavkat Rakhmonov, a rising UFC welterweight, has set his sights on a title fight in Abu Dhabi later this year.

The Kazakhstan athlete, 28, improved to 17-0 in professional MMA after submitting Geoff Neal at UFC 285 on Sunday morning.

The victory at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was Rakhmonov first since joining the UFC in 2020, and it improved his record to 5-0 in the promotion. All five victories – all 17 in professional MMA – have come via finish.

Rakhmonov aims for welterweight gold when the UFC returns to Abu Dhabi later this year. The welterweight title is currently held by Leon Edwards, who is set to defend his title next week in a trilogy fight with former titleholder Kamaru Usman. On March 18, UFC 286 will take place in London.

Rakhmonov made his UFC debut in Abu Dhabi, defeating Alex Oliveira by first-round submission at UFC 254 in October 2020, as part of the UAE capital’s second Fight Island series.

Jon Jones Warns Stipe Miocic: ‘My Entire World Will Be Focused On Him.’

With a comeback victory over Ciryl Gane at UFC 285, the new heavyweight champion made a statement to the division. Jon Jones celebrates after defeating Ciryl Gane to win the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 285 on March 4, 2023, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. AP

Jon Jones has warned Stipe Miocic to be more prepared than ever when they meet inside the octagon, with the new UFC heavyweight champion expecting to be even more dangerous than he was in his stunning victory over Ciryl Gane at UFC 285.

Jones, 35, made his UFC debut after a three-year absence with a devastating performance against Gane in the main event in Las Vegas on Sunday morning, dispatching the No. 1 ranked contender by first-round submission to claim the vacant belt.

Dana White: Jon Jones Cements His Status As The ‘goat’ With A Stunning Victory Over Ciryl Gane At UFC 285

Jones, who had not competed in the promotion since February 2020, dispatched the Frenchman with a guillotine choke in less than two minutes. Jones, a former light heavyweight champion with numerous UFC records, including the youngest-ever winner, was making his heavyweight debut.

Jones set his sights on Miocic, a two-time heavyweight champion considered the greatest of all time in that division, after becoming only the eighth athlete in UFC history to win belts in two different weight classes.

The two are expected to square off at UFC 290 during International Fight Week in July. Stipe, 40, has also been out of action for some time, with his most recent appearance in the UFC coming in March 2021, when he lost his heavyweight title to Francis Ngannou.

Meanwhile, Gane couldn’t hide his disappointment in the immediate aftermath of his second loss in his 12-fight pro career. In January of last year, the former interim champion was defeated by the-undisputed champion Ngannou unanimously.

Alexa Grasso Expected the “Perfect Opportunity” to Submit Valentina Shevchenko

Expectations burdened Alexa Grasso for years before her UFC 285 career-defining victory over Valentina Shevchenko.

Dana White once referred to Grasso as the “Ronda Rousey of Mexico,” a label the Lobo Gym MMA product struggled to live up to during her early career. After going 3-3 in her first six Octagon appearances, Grasso hit her stride with a five-bout UFC winning streak, culminating in her capturing the flyweight championship in Saturday’s co-main event.

Grasso was a significant underdog against Shevchenko, regarded as among the top two or three female pound-for-pound athletes. She never appeared out of her depth against “Bullet,” ultimately setting the stage for the unexpected conclusion.

When Shevchenko missed a spinning back kick in the fourth round, Grasso quickly took her opponent’s back and pursued a submission. The move that forced Shevchenko to tap was more of a face crank than a rear-naked choke, but the pressure was indisputable. It was especially satisfying for Grasso, who entered mixed martial arts with a reputation for boxing prowess.

This improvement was reflected in her victory over Shevchenko, who currently leads the clubhouse for “Surprise of the Year” in 2023. Given Shevchenko’s recent dominance in the division, it is likely that a rematch will be necessary. Grasso is open to the possibility if that turns out to be the UFC’s chosen direction.

Regardless of the future, Grasso made history by becoming the first UFC champion of Mexican descent. It certainly did not occur overnight. Grasso was already well-known in her native country, but she will likely become even more prominent now that she is the UFC champion. She is appreciative of the recognition.
