Volkmann cut from UFC

Christmas is over in the UFC. Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann announced via his twitter today that he has been released from the promotion following a loss to Strikeforce import Bobby Green at UFC 156. Volkmann tweeted the following statement:

I just got cut from the UFC today. I want to thank the fans, and say i gave it my all. No regrets.

Volkmann had compiled a 6-2 record in the UFC’s lightweight division but had lost two of his last three fights by submission. The loss to Green came via rear-naked-choke and British submission expert Paul Sass caught him with a triangle armbar at UFC 146.

The Minnesota Martial Arts Academy product was known as much for his wrestling-based attack as his controversial political stances outside of it. He gathered national media attention (and a visit from the Secret Service) when he told Ariel Helwani that he wanted to fight US President Barack Obama. He later gained more notoriety when he implied to Joe Rogan during a post-fight interview that Obama needed a “glassectomy”, which he told Rogan is “when you cut a hole in the belly button and put in a glass window so you can still see with your head up your ass”.

Volkmann now has more time to devote to his chiropractic firm and his volunteer coaching of the White Bear Lake high school wrestling team. He leaves the UFC tied for the most wins in the lightweight division over the past three years along with UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and Jim Miller.
