UFC 163: Thales Leites def. Tom Watson via unanimous decision

|

In a middleweight clash at tonight’s UFC 163, Tom “Kong” Watson squares off with the returning Thales Leites.

Round 1 saw Leites closing the distance early with strikes, clinching with Watson and going for the takedown. The jiu jitsu stand out would reach deep into his bag of legal-but-dirty tricks and do things such as place his hand over Watson’s mouth in an effort to help tire the Brit faster. Leites eventually took “Kong’s” back, holding the position for around 3 minutes before Watson shook him off, got back to his feet and started landing some kicks. Thales Leites takes the round, 10-9.

The second stanza started off similar to the first, with Leites landing some strikes before taking Tom Watson down and getting top position. After dancing all over “Kong,” Thales Leites eventually went for the armbar, only for Watson to escape. Watson would start to take over, stuffing a takedown and landing a hard uppercut, but it still did not appear to be enough to take the round.

Both Thales Leites and Tom Watson were tired to start the third, but it would continue to be Leites in the driver’s seat. The Brazilian put fist to face and busted Watson open the hard way, creating a cut around the Brit’s eye. Nearly halfway through the round, Leites scored with a double leg takedown and once again resumed his positional control clinic. The BJJ black belt would attempt an arm control near the end of the round, but it was not enough to finish as the fight goes to the judge’s scorecards.
