I was so lucky to catch a wonderful ESPN show” 30 for 30 ” that looked back at the crazy Duran vs Sugar Ray Leonard II fight in New Orleans aka No Mas! I mention this only cause these weigh-ins have become so silly. These non-events draw 10’s of thousands of fans to see the weigh-in( I guess that means these pre-agreed to menacing stares and bad-breath). Nothing happens nor should it, these are pros facing fights. Seeing the No-Mas first fight brought the real nasty sides out of the two top “warriors” . Duran never needed to be motivated when training he was animal-like. Sugar-Ray up till this fight got by on talent alone but Duran brutalized him in this loss. Leonard came-back quickly and fought again in November and really let the newly developed animal motivation really added to his fighting ability while Duran wished to enjoy his big victory and wanted to party a few more months. Their disdain/hate was apparent when they faced-off during the weigh-in . The area around the two was explosive. I rarely saw such an edge before or since but still we have these silly weigh-ins, meaningless unless, 10’s of thousands of idiots, with tons of free time, have to do something prove they are rabid fans who will pay almost a $100.00 for a pay-per-view where the weigh-in is the best action….Go figure??
