UFC 164 has another tilt scheduled now with the announcement of Vera taking on Rothwell.
MMA Junkie broke the news earlier today.
Brandon “The Truth” Vera (12-6 1 N/C) will be making his return to heavyweight after a middling venture down to 205 lbs. The Fil-Am fighter comes into this bout after a 4 round war with “Shogun” Rua in the main event of last year’s UFC on Fox 4 card. Known primarily for his kickboxing skills, Vera is one of the few fighters to have earned a TKO with leg kicks, doing so against Reese Andy at UFC Fight Night 14 back on July 19, 2008. “The Truth” last tasted victory against Elliot Marshall at UFC 134, taking a unanimous decision.
“Big” Ben Rothwell (32-9) has alternated wins and losses since joining the UFC in 2009, going 2-3 in that span. He has also had to deal with a variety of injuries. In many ways, that makes his career trajectory at the moment very similar to Vera’s. He enters this fight off of a submission loss to an at-the-time surging Gabriel Gonzaga. The heavy-handed Wisconsinite has 18 (T)KOs to his name may pose a significant finishing threat to Vera, who has been thrice finished by strikes, officially.
UFC 164 is scheduled to take place on August 31st, 2013 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukie, Wisconsin. This is the second heavyweight bout currently penciled in for the card, joining Alistair Overeem vs. Travis Browne..
