World Series of Fighting officials announced on Monday that Jon Fitch would get the next crack at the organizations welterweight championship.

He will be waiting in the wings, as Steve Carl and Rousimar Palhares battle it out at WSOF 9 in March. Fitch will be taking on the winner later this year.

Fitch (25-6-1 1NC) is 1-1 inside the WSOF Decagon. He lost his debut match in shocking fashion, when he was guillotine choked by Josh Burkman just 41-seconds in to the very first round. He went on to win his next bout by split decision against Marcelo Alfaya at WSOF 6.

Carl (21-3) is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak — with his most recent victory, for the welterweight title, coming over Josh Burkman at WSOF 6. He has won all three of his WSOF fights, his other two coming against Ramico Blackmon and Tyson Steele.

Palhares (15-5) was one of the most dangerous grapplers in the UFC, but was released after holding on to a submission against Mike Pierce in October of last year. This title fight will be Palhares’ WSOF debut.

WSOF 9 will go down on March 29, 2014 in Paradise, Nevada, United States.
