A Featherweight clash between Clay Guida (30-14) and Tatsuya Kawajiri (33-7-2) is in the works for the UFC’s return to the Middle East in April.
Fight Sport Asia first reported the match-up after confirmation with sources close to the situation.
Tatsuya Kawajiri locks horns with Clay Guida at UFC Fight Night 39
The bout has been slated to UFC Fight Night 39, which takes place April 11th at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Kawajiri celebrates after gaining his first victory in the UFC.Clay Guida fights for the first time since his TKO setback against Chad Mendes at UFC 164 in August last year. That was Guida’s first defeat by TKO stoppage in his storied career. He’s currently on a 2-3 run with both wins coming against Hatsu Hioki and Anthony Pettis.
Despite the 32-year-old’s dip in form, it’s well worth noting that his past five defeats have all come against former title challengers – Kenny Florian, Diego Sanchez, Benson Henderson, Gray Maynard and the aforementioned Chad Mendes.
Kawajiri (pictured), meanwhile, had a successful UFC debut in Singapore, where he submitted the Blackzilians’ Sean Soriano in impressive fashion. The Japanese MMA staple has established a huge following since his days in PRIDE, Shooto and DREAM, as he looks to continue his perfect start at a 145-lbs in the UFC. He holds wins over a who’s who of MMA personnel on his resume, including Josh Thomson, Joachim Hansen, Gesias Cavalcante and Michihiro Omigawa among others.
