The UFC will make their first trip to New Zealand at the end of June and the main event has been set. The Auckland fans will be treated to a middleweight match-up between James Te Huna and Nate Marquardt.
The MMA Corner first reported the fight on Monday, with UFC officials later confirming it.
Te Huna (16-7) is on a two-fight losing skid, at UFC 160 he was finished by first round submission against Glover Teixeira and most recently a knockout loss to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 33. Prior to the back-to-back losses, Te Huna was riding a four-fight winning streak.
Marquardt (32-13-2) is on a dreaded three-fight losing streak, with losses to Tarec Saffiedine under the Strikeforce banner, then Jake Ellenberger and most recently Hector Lombard since coming back to the UFC. Marquardt fought Anderson Silva for the middleweight championship and lost via first round TKO, and on two different occasions, “The Great” fought in middleweight title eliminator matches, however he came up short to Chael Sonnen and Yushin Okami.
There are two events planned for June 28, as another Fight Night event will go down in San Antonio.
The UFC Fight Night event in Auckland, New Zealand will go down at Vector Arena and will stream live on UFC Fight Pass.
