Going into this fight at UFC 173, Jamie Varner needed a big win to stay in the UFC. He is coming off some tough losses and was a favorite going into this fight. His back was against the way and James Krause is nowhere near as experienced as Varner.

Jamie Varner Loses at the End of the First Round to James Krause Due to Injury

In the first round, Varner looked like he injured his foot and was having trouble standing throughout the entire round. He was trying to get some offense going but was not able to put much weight on his left foot. He toughed it out for the entire round but was unable to stand as the round came to an end.

Though Varner looked like he was ready to go, a brutal injury to his left ankle forced him to call it quits at the end of the first round. While Krause may not have displayed much offense in the short bout, he was able to get the victory over a very credible opponent and will likely see a higher ranked fighter in his next bout.
