Vancouver, B.C. – In the co-main event at UFC 174, British Columbia’s own Rory MacDonald and Tyron Woodley did battle.
Rory MacDonald sweeps the judges scorecards against Tyron Woodley at UFC 174
MacDonald immediately took to the center of the Octagon to stalk Woodley. The “Lets go Rory” chants began almost instantly. Woodley was able to get the fight into the clinch and eventually up against the cage. Upon the break, MacDonald once again took the center and threw a nice high kick. MacDonald is looking much more aggressive than his last few fights, landing uppercuts and kicks. Woodley pushed MacDonald against the cage, but he was able to circle out. Woodley was able to take MacDonald to the ground, but “Ares” made his way right back to his feet and threw punches and kicks with Woodley’s back against the cage. A pitter patter combination landed for MacDonald with about 10-seconds left in the opening frame.
MacDonald pushed Woodley backwards to start the second as well. The Tristar fighter is landing at will with three and a half minutes left, but Woodley continued to throw bombs. The hometown boy pushed Woodley against the cage for the majority of the second with head-body-head punches. Woodley hasn’t looked to take the center of the cage at any point in the fight. MacDonald having fun bouncing around with under a minute left.
Woodley throwing caution to the wind to start the third round. After about thirty seconds of Woodley throwing big shots, MacDonald once again pushed the fight back against the cage. A shot to the body seemed to hurt Woodley. With three minutes left, MacDonald took Woodley down with a big double leg takedown. Woodley had seemed hurt since the second round and MacDonald is throwing short elbows to the body to make matters worse. MacDonald postured up and landed a big right hand, before winding up in Woodley’s butterfly guard. Woodley attempted to sit up and MacDonald ended up in side control. With twenty-five seconds left MacDonald just pours down bombs on Woodley’s head for the remainder of the fight.
