It looks like Donald Cerrone will be receiving another 50,000 bonus for his knockout of Jim Miller. After being taken down on multiple occasions in the first round, Cerrone made it a stand-up fight and it was his fight to lose from there. It all started in the late first round when Cerrone landed a knee to the body against the cage. Miller looked flustered after that, despite winning the round.
He never went for another takedown from there and Cerrone was in complete control. He was mixing his strikes up well and really started working his Muay Thai to perfection. A front kick to the body and the fight had appeared to be over. Unfortunately, Dan Miragliotta incorrectly stopped the fight in believing that Miller had been hit in the groin. As the replay showed, Miller was clearly hit in the stomach and the fight should have been stopped. It was a massive mistake in such a big fight for both fighters.
Eventually the mistake never came back to haunt Cerrone, as he landed a right head kick that finished Miller emphatically. The kick was so well-executed and the timing couldn’t have been better. That is four straight wins for Cerrone (24-8), as a potential number one contender’s fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov is looming. The loss snaps Miller’s two fight win streak, as it seems he can’t get over the hump once again. He couldn’t close the distance efficiently after the first round. That’s what mainly led to his downfall.
