Tony Ferguson vs. Danny Castillo is the new co-main event for UFC 177, headlined by Bantamweight Champion T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao 2.
UFC officials made the announcement Wednesday morning.
The UFC 177 co-main event was originally a second championship bout on the card, Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso. That bout was moved to the main event of UFC 178, because Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones got injured while training. UFC 178 was scheduled to be headlined by Jones vs. #1 contender Daniel Cormier. That bout was moved to UFC 182 in January.
After the bouts were moved around, it appeared that Bethe Correira vs. Shayna Baszler was the co-main event, but it was switched so that Ferguson vs. Castillo is the co-main event.
Ferguson is coming off of a first-round finish victory over Katsunori Kikuno at UFC 173 in May on the preliminary card. He showed a dominant performace before finishing Kikonu. He’s looking to extend his winning streak to three later this month.
Castillo is coming off of a stunning second-round knockout victory over Charlie Brenneman at UFC 172 in April, also on the preliminary card. A win over Ferguson will put him at two wins in a row.
UFC 177 takes place in Sacramento, California on August 30th, 2014. It is headlined by the rematch between Bantamweight Champion T.J. Dillashaw and former champion Renan Barao. Dillashaw ended Barao’s championship reign last May at UFC 173 in amazing fashion.
