An emotional speech by Danny Castillo perhaps touched the hearts of many as ‘Last Call’ felt he was on the wrong end of the judges’ decision in his 155-lbs tussle with Tony Ferguson.
It was a classic debate of top control vs. activity off one’s back and on this occasion, the judges were in favor of the latter action.
UFC 177 Results: Tony Ferguson takes split call against Danny Castillo
Castillo-Ferguson was the co-main event of the UFC 177 card at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. It aired on pay-per-view.
Ferguson pushed the pace throughout, and particularly shone in the stand-up department, where his head movement and crisp punches got him the better of Castillo. He even had a D’Arce choke attempt in the dying minutes of the first frame.
Ferguson followed up with a variety of submission attempts for the next two rounds, while Castillo’s attention shifted towards scoring takedowns and securing top control.
A split decision was eventually announced and the scores read 28-29, 29-28, 29-28 in favor of Ferguson. Castillo looked on with dismay, as the crowd rained down continuous boo’s. Castillo’s disappointment was seemingly justified, given how history suggested that a fighter would get his hands raised based on top control and position.
