A welterweight tilt has been set up for UFC 183 which is the second pay-per-view event of 2015, as former title-contender Thiago Alves takes on young veteran Jordan Mein in a fight that could boost the winner up into the Top 10. They were originally setup to fight at UFC Fight Night 59 in August, but Alves was forced to pull out due to injury, and was replaced by Brandon Thatch, who shortly after was replaced by Mike Pyle.
Thiago Alves vs Jordan Mein set for UFC 183 in January
UFC officials announced the matchup on Thursday.
Alves (20-9) last fought at UFC on FOX 11 this past spring, which was his first fight in almost two years, and he defeated Seth Baczynski in the Fight of the Night. The former welterweight contender will be looking to move up the rankings closer to the top of the division, with a win over Mein.
Mein (29-9) has won 5 of 6 of his last fights, most recently defeating Pyle in a very quick first-round knockout effort in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 49 in August.
UFC 183 takes place in Las Vegas, on Jan. 31 and is headlined by a highly anticipated middleweight matchup between former champion Anderson Silva vs. former welterweight title contender Nick Diaz.
