A second fight for UFC Fight Night 59 has been announced, as two former champions are set to go head to head early next year. The former UFC lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, is scheduled to face former Bellator lightweight champion in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 59 in Boston, in January 2015.
UFC officials announced the matchup on Wednesday evening.
Benson Henderson vs Eddie Alvarez set as co-main event of UFC Fight Night 59 in Boston
Henderson (21-4) went on a two-fight win streak after losing the lightweight belt to Anthony Pettis just over a year ago, as he defeated Josh Thompson and Rustam Khabilov in the first half of 2014. Raphael dos Anjos pulled off a major upset in August in the main event, knocking Henderson out in the first round. Henderson looks to get back on track, moving towards that #1 spot he sat at, till he was beat a couple months ago.
Alvarez (25-4) vacated his Bellator title to make his highly anticipated UFC debut at UFC 178 this past September against Donald Cerrone, but ended up losing via unanimous decision. He still performed well against the top 5 fighter, and looks to rebound from his fourth career loss and climb the UFC rankings quickly with a win over Henderson.
Henderson vs. Alvarez is set as the co-main event of the evening.
UFC Fight Night 59 takes place at the TD Garden in Boston on Jan. 18, 2015. The event is headlined by Conor McGregor vs. Dennis Siver, and is expected to air live and free on FOX Sports 1 with prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
