A highly anticipated lightweight clash that has been years in the making, has been slated as the co-main event of the UFC’s second trip to Mexico City, as Gilbert Melendez and Eddie Alvarez look to get back into the win column.

UFC officials announced the matchup on Monday.

Melendez (22-4) is one of the best lightweights in the world despite owning a 1-2 UFC record.  Most recently, he was stopped by champ Anthony Pettis at UFC 181 last December.  His lone win was a ‘Fight of the Year’ candidate against Diego Sanchez, and his other loss was a controversial decision loss to then-titleholder Benson Henderson.

Alvarez (25-4) made his long-awaited UFC debut last year following a run in Bellator MMA that included holding the title, but lost his promotional debut against No. 3 lightweight Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone via decision, at UFC 178.

UFC 188 takes place live from Mexico City, Mexico on June 13.  In the main event a heavyweight title unification bout takes place between champ Cain Velasquez and interim titleholder Fabricio Werdum.
