Jack Hermansson’s (19-4) first UFC main event will come on short notice against a premium name in the middleweight division.
Yoel Romero (13-3) was forced to withdraw from April’s UFC on ESPN 3 headliner due to illness. This paved the way for Hermansson to step in and fight Ronaldo Souza (26-6) in a bout with title implications.
Jack Hermansson and Jacare Souza set for UFC on ESPN 3 bout
UFC on ESPN 3 takes place in the BB&T Center, Sunrise, Florida on April 27. The card airs on ESPN following early prelims on ESPN+.
Hermansson’s rapid rise
After losing to future light-heavyweight title challenger Thiago Santos, Hermansson has turned his UFC career around. He earned a number ten middleweight ranking with an impressive 49-second submission of former WSOF middleweight and light-heavyweight champion David Branch at UFC on ESPN 2.
‘The Joker’ has finished his last five victories and will make a claim for a title shot with a victory in Florida.
Souza’s struggles
Souza’s last octagon performance was at UFC 230 where he beat former UFC middleweight champion, Chris Weidman, with a stunning knockout after a three round war. However, prior to this, Souza had lost two of his last three UFC bouts. These include a controversial loss to Kelvin Gastelum and a knockout at the hands of current champion Robert Whittaker.
Although a win over Romero would have almost guaranteed a title shot, a win over the Hermansson will not come without merit for the Brazillian. According to ESPN.com, Souza has been promised a title shot if he beats ‘the Joker’ in Florida.
