In an Instagram story by former UFC fighter Zelim Imadaev, a Chechen teen was referred to as a “hero of Islam” for his act of beheading a French teacher recently. The event occurred in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, a commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris. The teenage refugee was shot and killed by police shortly after the attack. Bloody Elbow was the first to report.

During his UFC tenure, Imadaev was a controversial figure in the Octagon. In his UFC debut at UFC 236 against Max Griffin, he flipped his opponent off at the end of the first round. In his most recent fight against Michel Pereira, he slapped his opponent during a face-off. Imadaev went 0-3 in the UFC and was cut earlier this summer according to UFC officials. This statement, however, is a new level of controversy. Along with calling the teenager a hero, he also asked that “Allah approve this jihad”.

The suspect, named on Twitter as “Abdoulakh A”, claimed responsibility for this senseless act, tweeting “I have executed one of the dogs from hell that dared to put Muhammad down”. A photo of the decapitated head was included in the tweet, as well as on his phone. His brother and grandparents were arrested, among others, in the wake of the attack. His half-sister is also reported to be a member of ISIS. French mourners have taken to the streets near the teacher’s school to protest and demonstrate their anger over this act.
