Alistair Overeem met Alexander Volkov in a massive heavyweight clash at UFC Vegas 18. Both fighters were trying to position themselves into possible title eliminator fights and this one did not disappoint.

In what was a dramatic clash of heavyweights, Alexander Volkov took a giant step forward by knocking Alistair Overeem out in the second round of their main event clash. It was an outstanding performance from Volkov who repeatedly busted Overeem up and finished him with a series of strikes just two minutes into the second round.

In the early going, both men used measured striking, with Overeem landing a couple of stinging left hands. Both fighters exhibited patience and Overeem landed a nice uppercut before being caught with a left that seemed to stumble him. He covered up and weathered the storm. Volkov also landed kicks a nice knee early on.

Alistair Overeem is a fan of covering up against the fight and did so effectively early. Volkov cut Overeem and bloodied his face. Overeem looked to be fading a touch in the second round of the fight. Volkov wobbled Overeem with a left, right combination and then landed some shots along the fence. Overeem was busted up and looking for takedowns. Volkov landed more strikes and butchered Overeem who was an absolute mess when the fight ended.

Daniel Cormier spoke to Volkov after the fight and the following to say.

“For sure, I want to fight for the belt for sure.” He certainly deserves a fight with the champion after that victory.
