The UFC 258 main event is in the books. It seemed like it was a painful process to finally get Karamu Usman and Gilbert Burns in the Octagon together, but the result was worth the wait.
Kamaru Usman vs. Gilbert Burns
The third title defense for Usman started quickly. Burns pressed the action, throwing punches and kicks. Burns landed a giant overhand right early in the fight. And followed up with a couple more big right hands. Usman regained his composure after a slip from Burns on a high kick. When the two returned to their feet Burns landed power, while Usman landed precision.
Round two began with Burns pushing forward once again. Usman worked completely off his jab to start things off. A big overhand right rocked Burns and Usman smelled blood in the water, but show patience and picked his shots. With just over one minute left in the round, Usman dropped Burns with a jab. A staredown between the two finished the round off.
A straight right hand dropped Burns right at the start of the third round and some ground and pound forced referee Herb Dean to call a stop to the fight.
Kamaru Usman earned a third-round TKO victory at 39-seconds.
In his post-fight speech with Joe Rogan, Usman stated, “This one was a tough one because of the whole gym situation with me leaving.
I’m a whole ‘nother savage and he saw that tonight.”
“I am the welterweight champ for a reason and I’m here to stay,” Usman said in heated fashion.
Kamaru Usman now holds the record for welterweight win streak in the UFC at 13. What’s next for the welterweight champion is unknown, but he needs someone new.
That was Burns’ first loss since mid-2018. He is still arguably one of the top welterweight contenders in the world.
UFC 258 went down on February 12, 2021, from Las Vegas, Nevada. Check out the full UFC 258 results.
