In the UFC 258 co-main event, the women’s flyweight division was on notice. Number 10 ranked Maycee Barber took on number 15 ranked Alexa Grasso.

Alexa Grasso vs. Maycee Barber

A straight striker vs. grappler match-up. Grasso got the striking going early and immediately as she began landing, Barber closed the distance and looked to clinch. This was the case the entire first round, with Barber bouncing and looking to shoot, while Grasso being very patient and landing crisp strikes.

Much the same as the second stanza began. Grasso landed a beautiful combination a couple of minutes into the round and Barber immediately clinched. Even inside the clinch, Grasso was not overwhelmed and seemed to land the cleaner shots. After a slip from a kick by Grasso, Barber was able to capitalize and land in the top position. Grasso utilized an armbar to sweep to the top and transitioned beautifully on the ground to close out the round on Barber’s back.

It took over one minute for anything to happen in the third round and after a few strikes, it was Grasso to push the fight up against the cage. Barber landed a fantastic inside leg trip, but after a few big ground and pound shots, Grasso made her way back to the feet. Barber began letting her hands fly from everywhere, but Grasso was able to regain her composure in the clinch.

After the bell sounded, the judges scored the fight in favor of Alexa Grasso, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28.

Grasso was undefeated coming into the UFC and one of the most highly touted flyweight prospects. Since joining the most recognized promotions in the world, the 27-year-old has gone 5-3.

Prior to this fight, Barber had only one blemish on her record. At UFC 246 last January, “The Future” lost a decision to veteran Roxanne Modafferi. Following that bout, she took the year off to recover from a nagging knee injury. We will see where the 22-year-old goes following this performance.

UFC 258 went down on February 12, 2021, from Las Vegas, Nevada. Check out full UFC 258 results.
