On Friday, ONE Championship announced an all-women’s event set to take place on Friday, May 28. The event, featuring the quarterfinal matchups of the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix, will be titled ONE: Empower.
Xiong Jing Nan Takes on Michelle Nicolini at ONE: Empower
In addition to the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix, the event will be headlined by “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan, defending her ONE Women’s Strawweight World Championship for the fifth time. Standing opposite the ONE Circle from her will be the #2-ranked contender, Michelle Nicolini.
Xiong is coming off her fourth title defense, a hard-earned victory over Tiffany Teo, but will be facing her toughest test to date.
Nicolini is a multiple-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and former ADCC gold medalist. The strawweight has three submission wins to her credit under the ONE banner and an additional win over Angela Lee.
Before the main event, the quarterfinals of the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix will take place, featuring two promotional debuts and a highly-anticipated rematch.
In the first match, Itsuki Hirata will welcome Alyse “Lil’ Savage” Anderson to ONE for their quarterfinal matchup.
The action continues to heat up in the following contest.
In February, Stamp Fairtex seemed like she was on her way to victory, but in the final seconds of their match, Alyona Rossohyna got the tap to pick-up a key victory and punched her ticket to the tournament. Now, they will meet again with higher stakes on the line.
Undefeated wrestling star Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phogat will get her most formidable opponent to date as she meets the heavy-handed and #2-ranked contender, Meng Bo. The clash of styles could provide the first round’s most compelling matchup.
The final quarterfinal pits Denice “The Menace” Zamboanga against one of the most talented veterans in the sport, Seo Hee Ham. The South Korean will be making her debut in ONE and has the perfect opportunity to establish herself as a top contender by knocking off the #1-ranked atomweight in the division.
The ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix is set and looks to be an incredible tournament. The winner will get a shot at the World Championship and Angela Lee later in 2021.
ONE: Empower will air live and free on B/R Live on Friday, May 28. The bout order is subject to change, and additional bouts may be added. Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
