At UFC on ABC 2, Julian Marquez steps back inside the cage for the second time in 2021. The 30-year-old takes on ‘Smilin’ Sam Alvey.

Alvey was initially supposed to face Marquez’s teammate at Glory MMA & Fitness Zak Cummings, however, due to unforeseen circumstances Cummings was forced out of the bout and Marquez stepped in, no questions asked.

“One day I showed up to the gym Zak was having complications,” Marquez explained to James Lynch for MMASucka.com. “The manager looked over at me and was like, ‘can you make 85?’ James Krause looked at me and was like, I like that fight for you and that’s pretty much how I walked into that one.”

When asked about it being difficult to step in against a guy like Alvey, Marquez made it crystal clear as to how he felt about that, “No not at all, I’m gonna f*ck him up.”

Prior to his last-minute submission victory against Maki Pitolo, Marquez was out of action for 31-months. Lynch asked “The Cuban Missile Crisis” if he liked Alvey and if it was hard to beat someone up like him due to the happy-go-lucky nature of his opponent.

“It’s a business. 31-months, I stayed right here in the darkness, no one gave a sh*t about me, no one looked at me and I was sitting there working on my tools, sharpening my tools,” Julian Marquez said. “Mental game, physical game, my striking, my grappling, everything. You saw it my last fight, my mentality I had, the way to come back after pretty much losing three rounds, still going after it, going for the win. I don’t care, outside of the cage I like Sam Alvey, inside of the cage, he’s an opponent. I have to go against him and he’s one person standing in the way of me going for my dream.”
