Submission Underground finally makes its 2021 debut today with Submission Underground 21. The card is headlined by the Submission Underground king and men’s champion Mason Fowler defending his belt against another SUG mainstay in “The Boogeyman” Richie Martinez. Both Martinez and Fowler won their most recent bouts by armbar in regulation at SUG’s last event, Submission Underground 20.
The co-main event features the Submission Underground queen and women’s champion Amanda Loewen putting her belt on the line against UFC flyweight contender and women’s MMA pioneer Roxanne Modafferi. Loewen is undefeated in SUG, most recently defeating former UFC featherweight title challenger Felicia Spencer by armbar during regulation at Submission Underground 19. “The Happy Warrior” Modafferi makes her SUG debut in this event, but is known to be a talented grappler in the MMA realm.
Submission Underground 21 also brings the return of tag team grappling, much like pro wrestling. The event will feature cousins Ricky Simon, UFC bantamweight prospect, and John Simon, a SUG vet, representing American Top Team- Portland. They will take on Team GFC, featuring Willie Audifre and Mike Currier.
The Submission Underground 21 main card is rounded out by two matchups. First, longtime SUG mainstay Andy Varela takes on former judo Olympic gold medalist and MMA heavyweight veteran Satoshi Ishii, whose girlfriend Kristin Mikkelson will be taking on Invicta FC and Combat Jiu-Jitsu Worlds veteran Liz Tracy on the preliminary card. Finally, a bout between high-ranking women’s flyweight MMA contenders takes place as former Bellator champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane takes on former UFC title challenger Jessica Eye.
