Miranda Maverick is set to return for her third UFC bout on July 24th, this time against Maycee Barber. The card currently doesn’t have a headline fight, but expect this one to be on the main card. These two prospects are set to compete in what is a pivotal point in both women’s careers.

Miranda Maverick

Miranda Maverick stands at 9-2, with a 2-0 record in the UFC. Her debut was certainly impressive, finishing Liana Jojua via doctors stoppage at the end of the first round. The former Invicta prospect won the Pheonix Series 2 tournament, submitting DeAnna Bennett in the final round of their fight.

Most recently, one of our prospects to watch, Miranda Maverick took on the highly touted, Gillian Robertson. She dominated Roberston in the first round, managing to keep the fight on the feet and utilise her superior stand-up skills. The second round showed some weaknesses in Maverick’s game. She was largely controlled on the ground, allowing Robertson to spend the majority of the round searching for submissions. Despite this, she showed solid jiu-jitsu defence, didn’t put herself into danger and managed to stay calm throughout. The third round was similar to the first, with Miranda Maverick staying dominant and coming away with the unanimous decision victory.

Maycee Barber

‘The Future’, Maycee Barber at one point in 2019 was the hottest prospect in the UFC. Starting her UFC career undefeated, Barber quickly progressed to 3-0 with three finish victories after an impressive performance on the contender series.

She was scheduled to face Roxanne Modafferi at UFC 246 in what should have been a real coming-out party for Barber. Unfortunately for ‘The Future’, she partially tore her ACL and subsequently lost the fight convincingly.

After over a year out of the octagon, Barber returned in the co-main event of UFC 258, facing fellow prospect Alexa Grasso. Barber suffered her second straight defeat, being largely dominated throughout.

Fear, The Future

This fight marks a career turning point in both women’s careers. For Miranda Maverick, it’s a clear step up in competition. Barber has a lot of power, a solid wrestling base and has a good coaching set up. Barber enters this one without a win since 2019 and will be highly motivated to stop the hype train that is Miranda Maverick. If Maverick can get the W, she will position herself well in the 125lbs division.

If Barber suffers her third straight defeat, it really pumps the brakes on her career progress. At one point she was looking to become the youngest UFC champion ever, breaking Jon Jones‘ record. If she falls to 0-3 in her last three fights, it may be a case of too much too soon for the young Barber and could see herself getting cut from the UFC.
