Fan favourite, Gunnar Nelson has signed a new multi-fight contract with the UFC. The Icelandic native announced via his social media platforms that a multi-fight deal has been signed and that there is ‘more news to come soon‘.
Despite falling on hard times as of late, Nelson certainly still has a future in the sport. The 33-year-old is 1-3 in his last four bouts, having lost to Santiago Ponzinibbio, Leon Edwards and Gilbert Burns. It’s worth noting that Burns went on to fight for the title two fights later and Edwards is seemingly on the cusp of a title shot himself. He dominated Alex Oliveira when they fought back in December 2018.
Having risen to fame with his strong grappling and karate style, Nelson was swept up in the circus that came with Conor McGregor, however, the two couldn’t be more opposite. The two both represented SBG Ireland when they entered the UFC and Nelson, like McGregor, went undefeated in his first few UFC fights. He notched four straight wins before suffering his first loss, in a main event against Rick Story. He has since relocated to train out of Mjolnir, a gym in his homeland of Iceland.
The two-time Pan American Games gold medalist was one of MMASucka’s picks as to who we want to see make a return in 2022 and it is certainly trending that way. We want to see him face either Mickey Gall, Walley Alves or an all European clash against Nicolas Dalby.
