2023 U.S. Sumo Open Preview

With the 2023 May Grand Sumo Tournament in full swing, the 2023 U.S. Sumo Open is set to take place tomorrow. The 23rd annual U.S. Sumo Open, the largest sumo tournament in North America, will once again take place at the Walter Pyramid at California State University Long Beach.

The U.S. Sumo Open prides itself in showcasing sumo talent across several weight divisions and countries. This year’s tournament will feature sumo talent from ten unique countries including Japan, Mongolia, Poland, Ukraine, and of course, the United States.

Mendsaikhan “Mendee” Tsogt-Erdene, the winner of the 2022 U.S. Sumo Heavyweight and Openweight divisions, will return to competition this year. Egyptian Sumo Champion Moataz Elkotb, Japanese 5x National University Champion Takeshi Amitani, and New Zealand’s Makini Manu are amongst the notable rikishi competing in the one day tournament.

The 2023 U.S. Sumo Open will be broadcasted via live stream on the U.S.A. Sumo’s YouTube page and will have a featured segment on CBS’s “Saturday Morning”.
