Various reports have stated that the UFC are looking to put together a fight between bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling and former double champion, Henry Cejudo.
The fight is set for May 6th according to Sterling, who stated as much during this week’s edition of his ‘Weekly scraps’ podcast. Unable to give a location or any other information regarding the event many fans have speculated that this will be the headliner of the yet to be announced, UFC 288 card. Reputable sources such as MMA Junkie and MMA Fighting have confirmed that negotiations are certainly taking place with contracts to be sent out soon and likely an official announcement shortly after.
The fight would be Sterling’s third defence of the title after victorious outings against Petr Yan and TJ Dillashaw. Cejudo, on the other hand has not fought in almost 3 years after announcing his retirement following a successful defence of the title against Dominick Cruz. We know that Cejudo has been set to return in recent months having re-entered into the USADA testing pool, oh which a fighter must have at least six months of clean tests before competing.
Cejudo is the lineal champion so to speak and retired on top of the division and is one of four fighters to ever be a two-weight champion simultaneously in the sport, his legacy is undoubtedly cemented as one of the greats. This champion vs champion matchup will surely be one of the most anticipated in 2023.
We don’t know for certain if this fight will go down at UFC 288. The bout was rumoured for earlier on in the year, however, Sterling ruled himself out of action as a result of wanting a torn bicep injury to heal fully before going back into training camp.
