UFC record holder, Gillian Robertson spoke to MMASucka to discuss a range of topics ahead of her bout this weekend with the undefeated Piera Rodriguez. The Savage holds the record for finishes and fights in flyweight history, however, she will be moving down to 115lbs for her April 15th fight.
Talking about the move down in weight, Robertson said: “When I first got signed with the UFC, I guess I was doing a little bit more lifting, probably carrying a little bit more muscle and walking around a little bit heavier. I was probably walking around like 145 then when I first signed, where now, my last three or four camps I think it’s been where I’ve been walking 132 when it comes to fight week I’m like 128 and be sweating two or three pounds out. The weight cuts are very simple, very easy and it’s like I don’t even have to think of it which I’m a huge fan of, but it’s also, a lot of these girls that I am fighting, like even my last matchup, Mariya Agapova. I remember when I was training with her at ATT she was walking around like 150, which I’m assuming she came into the fight around that because she was, she outsized me by a lot”.
Robertson continued, “I’m a lot smaller than used to be and thought it was the right time in my career, the right opportunity and I’m ready to make a title run at 115″.
She also noted that “It’s been in consideration for a long time I guess. My last couple of fights because I’ve been so tiny”.
TUF, McGregor and Chandler
Discussing her time of TUF, Robertson described it as “one of the best and one of the worst experiences of my life”. The difficulties came as a result of being cut off from the outside world whilst in the house. Robertson said, however, that being in the gym, training with other like-minded girls and getting good coaching is worth it. She described it as getting “The best work in the world”.
Talking about the upcoming TUF series featuring Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler, Robertson believes that they are going “to really bring the heat and the social aspect. I think there’s going to be a lot of sh*t talking and it’s going to be really interesting”.
