In a surprising turn of events, former Middleweight champion, Chris Weidman has announced that he will be returning to the octagon with a bout being targeted for March 30th on the Fight Night show in Atlantic City. Weidman at one time was considered the most talented middleweight on the planet and will go down in history as the man to dethrone one of the greatest of all time, Anderson Silva from his pedestal atop the middleweight division.
Still, since winning the belt in 2013 Weidman’s career did not go exactly to plan, after two successful defences of his championship, Weidman would drop the belt to Luke Rockhold in 2015 at UFC 194. This would be the start of a skid that would see him lose seven of the last nine fights of his career with perhaps him most notably suffering one of the most horrific leg breaks ever seen in MMA back in 2021 against Uriah Hall.
It was assumed that was the end of Weidman’s career yet miraculously he managed to make a return two years later when he faced off against fellow veteran, Brad Tavares last August. Despite how impressive it was that he managed to return to the octagon at all after such an injury, the display from Weidman was not up to standard and after sustaining another injury to his legs during the fight, it was assumed that he was done with the sport.
Yet this is not the case, as reports have emerged which state that Weidman is set to make a return to the octagon against knockout artist, Bruno Silva.
The news has received mixed reaction from fans with some eagerly anticipating the return of former champ Weidman. While others feel that they do not want to see the American subject to any more punishment inside of the octagon as can be seen in the tweet below. This is even more relevant when the opponent is as dangerous as Bruno Silva, a man who has 23 wins inside the cage, 20 coming via KO.
