The UAE Warriors Welterweight title changed hands this past Sunday with young prospect Omran Chaaban submitting Wisem Hammami in a monumental comeback in the fifth round following an inspirational talk from his head coach Chris Fields before the start of the fight’s final round.

Chaaban had been down on the scorecards heading into the fifth and it looked as if Hammami was going to cruise to the ninth victory of his career which would have taken his overall record to 9-1 had he not been submitted by Chaaban. The welterweight champion would be unable to reach the final bell, however, as Chaaban would promptly take down Hammami immediately at the start of the round and showing an impressive display of strength and skill managed to secure an arm triangle choke less than a minute into the fifth round.

Under the tutelage of Irish MMA legend Chris Fields, Chaaban has established himself as one of the top prospects at Fields’s gym Team KF. Just turned 23, Chabaan has now improved his professional record to 6-1 with him being undefeated in his last five fights with all of those victories coming via finish.

Now with a title win in UAE Warriors alongside a string of victories in Cage Warriors, it is easy to see why Chaaban has been touted for big things by Irish MMA pioneers such as Fields, Cathal Pendred and Philip Mulpeter. With the way things are going don’t be surprised to see the “The Lebanese Gorilla” signed to one of the major MMA promotions in the near future. Particularly with the UFC rumoured to make a long-awaited return to Dublin at the end of the year Chabaan may have the perfect opportunity to announce himself in a premier organisation.
