Dana White Explains McGregor vs. Cerrone at Welterweight

It is peculiar that welterweight is where Conor McGregor will make his return to the Octagon. Especially with the fact that he held titles at both featherweight and lightweight. At UFC 246, on January 18, McGregor will take on Donald Cerrone. UFC President Dana White explained the reasoning behind the 170-pound match-up on 101.6-FM in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

Dana White explains 170-pound match-up

“Conor is going to fight at 170 for this fight,” White said, “mainly because he doesn’t want to have to cut the weight to 155. He and Cerrone have both fought at 170.”

“Notorious” is currently sitting as a -230 favorite, with “Cowboy” a +190 underdog. If these odds are appealing check out the FOX Bet New Jersey promo code.

McGregor (21-4) fought back to back bouts against Nate Diaz at 170-pounds. He went 1-1 in those contests, before moving back to lightweight for his two most recent outings.

The welterweight fight is a calculated contest, with potential title implications — at lightweight.

“He’s hoping that he beats Cerrone and can turn right around and fight Khabib as quick as possible,” White said. “So he didn’t want to make the cut twice.”
