Options For The Postponed UFC Events

Recently the Covid-19 aka Coronavirus has been terrorizing the sports world. All sports have suspended their seasons and the UFC has been forced to postpone their events in London, Columbus, Ohio, and Portland, Oregon. Those events were set to take place on March 21st, March 28th and April 11th. In the midst of all of this, the UFC has also stated that the Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Fergurson fight that is set for April 18th is in jeopardy. At the moment though they only have three events that need to be rescheduled, so the question becomes, when? Today we will look into options for when the UFC will reschedule these events.

End Of The Year UFC Events

At the moment the UFC only has venues and dates secured up until August 15th in Dublin, Ireland. Therefore technically if the UFC can work it out with the venues they could just move these three events to September and October. It should be assumed that most of the fighters on said cards won’t wait until these dates. Instead, they will look to move certain fights to different dates closer to when all of this Corona non-sense quiets down. Which really wouldn’t be seen as an issue because all of the fights already postponed are fight nights. The biggest problem is going to be if they have to postpone UFC 249.

2021

It is also very possible that the UFC could have some trouble getting the venues booked for later in the year. The O2 arena, Nationwide Arena, and Moda Center are all very popular venues in their respective states. Therefore they could possibly already be booked to be doing other things in those venues later this year. This could result in the UFC moving these events until 2021. Another thing we have to think about is Dana White doesn’t always announce the fight dates and venues as soon as they are booked. That being said he could have the entire rest of the year already booked and just hasn’t announced it yet.

Conclusion

There only really seems to be two options when it comes to postponing these fights. Of course, the UFC’s approach is going to be to set these fights up as soon as possible. The unknown seems to be, how long will this Covid-19 last? How many more fights will be postponed? Only time will tell, but I’m sure I speak for all MMA fans when I say I hope this all dies down quickly and we can get back to the violence.
