ONE Championship will return on Friday, October 9, for ONE: Reign of Dynasties and the co-main event will have significant implications in the dynamic flyweight division.
Undefeated Finnish flyweight Aleksi “The Giant” Toivonen made his ONE debut last July with a first-round submission victory over Akihiro Fujisawa. Now he is back in action with a shot at the #5-ranked flyweight contender, Reece “Lightning” McLaren.
ONE: Reign of Dynasties has major flyweight battle
Toivonen has been sidelined with a torn ACL since last September, but now he is healed and ready to usher in a new era in the flyweight rankings as he eyes the ONE Flyweight World Championship and Adriano Moraes.
On the opposite side of the ONE circle will be McLaren.
McLaren has been a staple in ONE’s flyweight division, and he has put on some impressive showings with a 77% finishing rate. The longtime divisional standout suffered back-to-back losses in 2019 before ending the year on the right note with a dominant victory against Gurdarshan Mangat at ONE: Mark of Greatness.
The division’s king, Moraes, and ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion Demetrious Johnson are still on a collision course, leaving an opening for the next contender to the eventual winner.
The opportunity to put on a show-stealing performance and leap into the top contender’s spot is on the table, making this a crucial flyweight contest.
The flyweight contest will help kickstart the ‘Reign of Dynasties’ event series featuring several World Champions. The first event will be headlined by Sam-A Gaiyanghadao defending his ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Title against Josh “Timebomb” Tonna.
