Submission Underground returns for its second event of the year with Submission Underground 22. The card is headlined by dominant champion Mason Fowler, who will be defending his SUG Absolute Championship against fast-rising star Andy Varela. At last month’s Submission Underground 21, Fowler defended his title by defeating Richie Martinez via armbar in regulation while Varela defeated Satoshi Ishii via escape time in overtime.
The Submission Underground 22 co-main event features last event’s tag team winners, cousins Ricky Simon and John Simon of Team ATT, defending their SUG Tag Team Championship for the first time against Team SAC. Team SAC consists of former Bellator featherweight and SUG mainstay Cris Lencioni and teammate Owen Papworth. Similar to tag team pro wrestling, teammates that are not currently competing must stay in a certain designated spot unless tagged in by their competing teammate. The team then has three seconds to double-team their opponent before the teammate tagging out must reach the designated spot. The team with the most submissions at the end of the period wins.

The main card also features two current UFC fighters taking on MMA veterans and SUG staples. UFC flyweight contender Gillian Robertson will take on Invicta FC veteran Liz Tracy, who picked up an armbar victory at the SUG 21. Meanwhile, welterweight prospect Philip Rowe takes on LFA veteran Gabriel Checco, who most recently competed at SUG 19 in December. The main card is rounded out by Kyle Chambers, who had an impressive SUG debut win last time out, taking on Ben Egli, who was defeated by Varela in his most recent outing at SUG 20. A win for Chambers could make him the next title challenger.
The Submission Underground 22 prelims features a bevy of veterans of the promotion, including Alex Larmey, Andrew Alexander, Juan Bernardo, Don Stoner, Lee Flores and Nick Maximov, who is also an MMA prospect.
